PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Sustainable materials innovation and research firm Von Holzhausen has partnered with Herman Miller to make its plant-based leather alternative Banbū available on the Eames lounge chair and ottoman.
Banbū’s environmental impact is significantly lower than traditional cow leather. It offers up to five times the carbon emission savings and biodegrades in less than 250 days in a landfill, a stark contrast with traditional leather and polyurethane alternatives that can take centuries to decompose. Banbū consumes one-third less water than crops such as cotton and is significantly lighter than cow leather.

The composition of Banbū includes 83% plant-based content and 17% solvent-free polyurethane. The topcoat is primarily plant-based, and the backing fabric is made from 100% bamboo yarn, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Von Holzhausen is a research-focused company that develops high-performance, plant-based materials to replace plastic. Past collaborations include brands such as Apple and SEAT of the Volkswagen Group, in addition to producing its own line of fashion accessories, from handbags to ballet flats.
